TSA PreCheck Touchless ID can save you time as airport lines get longer. Heres how to sign up.

Skip Airport Lines: How to Fly Through Security Like a Pro (Even If You’re New to Travel!)

  • TSA has a new way to get you through security faster using your face.
  • You need to be a member of an airline’s rewards program and have TSA PreCheck to use it.
  • This could make traveling way less stressful and save you time at the airport.

Imagine This: You’re Heading on Your First Big Trip

You’ve saved up, you’ve planned everything, and you’re so excited to finally get on that plane. But then you get to the airport, and BAM! The security line is longer than your entire vacation itinerary. Everyone’s rushing, people are stressed, and you start to wonder if you’ll even make your flight. Sound familiar? Even if you haven’t flown much, you’ve probably seen it in movies or heard friends talk about it. Airports can feel like a chaotic maze, and the security checkpoint is usually the biggest bottleneck.

Now, imagine a different airport experience. You walk up to a special lane, glance at a scanner, and in just a few seconds, you’re through. No fumbling for your ID, no taking off your shoes and jacket in a rush. You’ve just fast-passed security! This isn’t a far-fetched dream; it’s something called TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, and it’s designed to make travel smoother for everyone.

What Exactly IS TSA PreCheck Touchless ID?

Think of the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) as the security guards for all flights in the United States. They have to make sure everyone is safe before they get on a plane. Usually, this means lining up, showing your ID and boarding pass, and going through scanners. It’s a necessary step, but it can take a lot of time.

TSA PreCheck Touchless ID is like a VIP pass that uses technology to speed up that security process. Instead of a person checking your ID and boarding pass, a special scanner uses your face to verify who you are. It’s similar to how some phones unlock using your face, but this is for airport security. The TSA says this makes identity checking “faster and more efficient.”

When you use this program at participating airports, you get to use a separate, dedicated lane for security. And guess what? These lanes are usually the ones with the shortest waits. So, instead of spending your precious pre-flight time in a long line, you could be grabbing a coffee, browsing the shops, or just relaxing before your flight.

Who Can Use This Magic Pass?

This isn’t something that’s available to absolutely everyone right off the bat. The TSA wants to make sure they know who you are before they let you use this faster system. To be eligible for TSA PreCheck Touchless ID, you generally need to meet a few key requirements:

  • You already have TSA PreCheck: This is a separate program that allows you to go through expedited security screening. It requires an application, background check, and a fee, but it means you don’t have to take off your shoes, belt, or light jacket, and you can leave your laptop and liquids in your bag.
  • You are a member of an airline’s frequent flyer program: Think of this like a loyalty program for the airline you fly with. If you fly with a particular airline often, you can sign up for their rewards program, and they often give you points or miles that you can use for future flights or upgrades.
  • You have an active frequent flyer profile with a participating airline: This means you’ve signed up for the rewards program and have an account that you use.
  • You have uploaded your valid passport information to that profile: This is a crucial step. The airline needs to have your passport details on file to link it to your TSA PreCheck status and use it for the Touchless ID system.

Right now, five major airlines are part of this program: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Southwest Airlines, and United Airlines. Each of them has a slightly different way of signing up, but the core idea is the same: link your TSA PreCheck status and your passport information through your airline rewards account.

How to Actually Sign Up (It’s Easier Than You Think!)

Let’s break down how you can get this fast-pass for each of the participating airlines. Remember, the key is to have your TSA PreCheck approved and then go into your airline’s rewards account.

For Alaska Airlines Flyers

If you fly with Alaska Airlines, you’ll need an “Atmost Rewards account.” Once you’re logged in:

  1. Add Your Details: Make sure your profile has your Known Traveler Number (KTN). This is the number you get when you are approved for TSA PreCheck. Also, add your valid passport information.
  2. Find the Option: Look for a section in your account labeled “travel documents.” Within that section, you should see an option to “Add TSA PreCheck Touchless ID.”
  3. You’re In! Once you click that, you’re enrolled. You’ll stay enrolled until you decide to opt out.

For American Airlines Flyers

American Airlines passengers will also need a rewards account, called “AAadvantage.” Here’s the process:

  1. Log In and Navigate: Sign into your AAadvantage account and go to the “information and password section.”
  2. Save Your Info: Make sure your KTN and passport information are saved in your rewards profile.
  3. Opt-In: Scroll through the section until you find the “TSA PreCheck Touchless ID” option. Check the box to opt in, and then save your changes.
  4. Yearly Renewal: It’s important to note that American Airlines requires you to opt-in every year, so keep an eye on your account to make sure you’re still enrolled for your next trip.

For Delta Air Lines Flyers

If Delta is your airline of choice, you’ll be using your “SkyMiles account.”

  1. Update Your Profile: Store your passport information and KTN in your SkyMiles profile. You can do this either through the Fly Delta app on your phone or by visiting delta.com.
  2. Choose the Option: Within your rewards profile, find and select the option to opt into Touchless ID.
  3. Look for the Badge: When you’re at a participating airport, keep an eye out for a green “Touchless” badge on signs. This will point you to the dedicated security lines and even bag drop areas.

For Southwest Airlines Flyers

Southwest travelers can opt in through their “Rapid Rewards account.”

  1. Access the App: Log into your Rapid Rewards account in the Southwest app.
  2. Select the Feature: Find and select the “TSA PreCheck Touchless ID” option.
  3. Scan and Add: Use your phone to scan your passport. Then, add your KTN into your profile and opt into the program.
  4. Check Your Boarding Pass: After your opt-in is saved, you’ll want to check your mobile boarding pass. It should have an indicator that says “TSA PreCheck Touchless ID,” letting you know it’s active for your flight.

For United Airlines Flyers

United passengers will use their “MileagePlus account” to enroll.

  1. Save Your Details: In the United app, navigate to your account and select the page for “TSA PreCheck and travel documents.” Here, you’ll save your passport and KTN.
  2. Opt Into Touchless ID: On that same page, you’ll find the option to opt into Touchless ID.
  3. Enroll Before Check-in: United emphasizes that each traveler needs to enroll through their own account before checking in for flights on the app.
  4. Permissions: It’s a good idea to read the airline’s privacy policy and give United permission to use your facial scan for identification.
  5. Bag Drop Shortcut: Similar to Delta, United also offers a Touchless ID shortcut for bag drops, not just security checkpoints, at participating airports. These are usually found at their main hub airports.

Where Can You Use This Faster Security?

The TSA is rolling this program out, and it’s currently available at 65 airports across the United States. The TSA has a map on its website that shows all the locations where Touchless ID is in use. So, before you travel, you can quickly check if your departure or arrival airport is one of them.

Why This Matters to You (Even if You Don’t Fly Often)

You might be thinking, “I’m 17, I don’t fly that much, why should I care?” Well, understanding how things like this work is the first step to becoming financially savvy.

  • Saving Time is Like Saving Money: Time is a valuable resource. When you can save time at the airport, that’s time you can use for other things – maybe catching up on homework, spending time with family, or even just relaxing. Think of it as getting a little bit of your life back.
  • Reduced Stress: Travel can be
